2012, The year of Extraordinary!

I am absolutely dazzled with the new year, it’s been more than anyone could ask for and I have deep gratitude for that. With every relationship whether it is a marriage or friendship there are good times and bad but when you can sync up and become better at communicating it helps to make the relationship so much better. I feel as if my most important relationship, that with my husband, has really taken a positive turn and that is a huge step. Work is busy and always interesting and fun. My friendships are amazing and strong with some very good people whose kindness and support is wonderful. What more could a gal need? I am realizing more and more how true it is that when you surround yourself with loving friendships and relationships it truly does change things immensely. Happy New Year to you all and may your life be surrounded by big fluffy clouds of love and positivity.
The School Lunches Dilemna

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the return of children to that magical place called school. I now have 2 of my 4 boys attending school full time and also staying at school for lunch. And so, the headache begins. What to pack in a lunch? One child, who is 6, is a vegetarian and the other, who is 10 is not. There are no nuts or anything that MAY contain nuts allowed on school property and my head pounds just thinking about it let alone sifting through labels. The other tough part is after school snacks that fill those hollow legs but still leave room for a good dinner a few hours later. Today I opted to make them a smoothie for after school, I put a banana, a handful of spinach, fresh raspberries, frozen blueberries, fresh peaches and a tablespoon of dark raw local honey, Vitamin D drops and Vitamin C crystals. That first few weeks of school is a disgusting infestation of germs and snots and disgusting so I use the smoothie as an opportunity to ‘hide’ vitamins and immune boosters like D and C. Lunches are a tad trickier, I use sunflower seed butter rather than peanut butter for the vegetarian but he is not a sandwich lover so option are limited with sandwiches. I intend to pack leftovers like the tempeh, chickpea, yam curry on brown rice I am making him tonight (as we eat Butter Chicken). I need ideas dear reader! Lots of good ideas for a 6 yr old vegetarian puhlease!!!!! Keep in mind he is 6 and probably not as adventurous as you adults.

Recently I was asked to test out two new to me products from Thera Wise, I had a choice of several but opted for the Skin Healing Ointment called SHO and the Vapourizing Decongestant Rub called VpR. We were headed to a cottage we rent every summer and I thought this was the best place to try these products out. We had many opportunities to get to use the SHO with 3 VERY active boys running around and playing near rocks and sharp objects, I was glad to have it on hand. The kids liked it because it did not sting or irritate their wounds and I liked it because they did not cry or complain. I was pleased with the results and the rate of healing and will certainly purchase this in future. The VpR I was not sure I would have an opportunity to try until the cold and flu season but lo and behold my youngest had a nagging nighttime cough that was keeping both of us up. I was thankful that I had remembered to pack the VpR and used that for two nights on my youngest. Both nights he slept soundly without waking from coughing and it seemed to work well for him. I have asthma and tried it out on a night I was feeling wheezy and it opened up my airways nicely so I could sleep comfortably as well. I will certainly be keeping my cupboard stocked with VpR for cold and flu season!
Thera Wise have other products on the market, an acne ointment, a hemorrhoid ointment and diaper rash cream. The website is http://www.therawise.com/ for information on where to purchase and new, upcoming products.

Greener Salon, Happier Planet

As previously mentioned, I have signed up with Green Circle Salons to responsibly dispose of the hair, foils, colour tubes, peroxide, product bottles and leftover colour waste. This is a program that recycles all this waste instead of it ending up in a landfill. This is very exciting for me, for years I have been searching for a solution to this issue and am so glad to have found it with Green Circle Salons. I take great pride in being able to offer an even greener service to my clients and although you may not notice a change physically in the salon it is a change for the better. There will be a $1.00 fee added to your service to cover the cost of pick-up and disposal for your services (one fee per visit not per service) that goes towards eco-conscious improvements and disposal.

Berry Plus: The Early Review

I have been asked to try out Berry Plus Laundry Detergent on 20 loads of laundry. Having a large family and a salon at home makes me a good candidate to test a product like detergent because I have all sorts of stains to contend with from hair colour to food to dirt and pet stains. I have washed 6 loads of laundry in Berry Plus and am very pleased. The first load I washed was a load of blacks that I washed in cold water, line dried…great results. The clothing did not dry stiff like most clothing does on the line, it was softer and it was nice to only smell outside on the clothes. The second load I washed was my white hair salon towels, they were covered in various shades of the rainbow and could definitely not be considered white any longer. I washed this load in cold water, dried in the dryer. Almost every colour stain was gone, the towels were not dingy or grey and they had zero static. Colour me impressed. Since then I have washed more darks and blues which have both been line dried or dryer depending on our weather and have been pleased all around. I am collecting a load of white that have taken on some grey to see if I can get them brightened up with the Berry Plus because when using natural or eco-friendly detergents dingy whites are a huge problem. I look forward to writing a final review of Berry Plus, one thing is for certain, Berry Plus will be coming to the cottage with us this summer!
Testing, Testing

I have signed myself and my family up to be a guinea pig of sorts for green, eco-friendly products so, as I test out these innovative and new domestic toys I will be letting you know the true dirt on whether these things are worth spending your hard-earned money on or not.
First up is Berry Plus laundry detergent. www.berryplus.com . I first encountered these little gems and I do mean this literally based on the little purple microdose vials it comes in, at the Green Living Show earlier this month. I was intrigued, the packaging is space-aged and minimalist so I will keep you informed as to the potency and effectiveness of Berry Plus. They claim good things come in small packages, here’s hoping!!!
Sentimentality and Auditory Memory Jogs

When family passes away I am never thinking there is an inheritance to be had, I am thinking about those items no matter how ‘valuable’ that remind me specifically of good times spent with that person. When my Grandmother passed away last year there was very little by way of stuff I wanted from her home but one of the things that really connected me to her home, memories and time spent with her more recently was wind chimes. She kept them under her car port and whenever we would pull up or leave that was the first sound you heard and the last, to me it meant Grandma’s House. The last time I left Grandma’s house on December 25th 2010 just after 10:30 pm I asked my Aunt if I could take the wind chimes and she said yes. I hung them up the second we got home on the 26th under my front porch so that every time we or someone came and went that was the first and last sound they heard. Those wind chimes meant more to me than anything. A few days ago after dropping the children off at school I noticed that the normal chime sound that I said good morning to every single day was not there. My heart damned near shattered. It felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me and I cried. Someone had helped themselves to my grandmother’s wind chimes. I was angry, I was sad, I was devastated. My first instinct was to replace them immediately, so I went to Chinatown, bought 2 sets, put them up right away and wired them securely but the sound did not match. So, I continue to hunt for THAT sound, the sound that said “Grandma’s House”. In the meantime, whoever took those chimes I hope they are of real value to you because by taking them you broke my heart. By taking them you took something very important from me, the sound of my Grandmother’s house.
